Our laboratory is focused on investigating the combination of chemistry, biology and materials science to address real world problems. The laboratory has pioneered the field of polymer-based protein engineering. Growing polymers from the surface of enzymes, the group has rationally tailored the properties of the protein and enabled ruggedized enzymes to be applied in health-related and defense-related arenas. Special interest has been focused on harnessing the power of biology in enzymatic fuel cells and biocatalytic therapeutics. Professor Russell's lab has published over 200 papers and has performed the underlying work that generated two successful biotechnology companies.
